Is this one of the most difficult holes anywhere in the world?? I hit a good drive tonight right down the middle. I was right next to the 150 yard marker so chose a 7 iron. I struck it well. It landed on the front of the green and span back into the water. So I hit another from exactly the same spot. I struck it well again. This time it landed in the middle of the green but took a big kick forward and ended up in the water over the back. Its was so frustrating and its not the 1st time its happened. I think in future I will just play my 2nd up short of the water and chip onto the green coz im finding it nearly unplayable in the conventional way. Id be interested to here other peoples views.

Well it does say it's stroke index one, therefore play the hole to your handicap. You have to be a very good player or a pro to be able to land the ball onto the green.
I assume you get a shot on the hold as there are very few scratch golfers at longhirst, so all I can say is use your shot on it, that's what the handicap is there for. What is your handicap out of interest? I play off 16 and never go for the green. I still think it's a specaltacular hole though |

| Off 13 at the min coz took 5 year away from the game to study. Started again a year ago. Was off 7 at Blyth. I did hit the green with my 2nd shot twice in a row, and both times ended up in the drink. I think I will take ya advice tho Chris and just accept a 5 and run from now on. |

| It's definately reachable in two with a good drive, but I would rather take a safe five than risk the water and walk off with a six or seven. Perhaps when the drought ends and the greens soften up we might hold it on the green in two! |

In all fairness John the hole is a stroke index 1 so that means a scratch golfer should par this hole, i play off 4 and have no problem flicking a wedge up there in 2?... I really dont understand what the problem is here, unless you want a really easy golf course?.. which I can certainly say is not what prople want. |

To be fair to John after reading the original post I didn’t get the impression that he was saying it should be made easier in fact I took it as a compliment to the hole he was making.
Personally I think its one of the best holes on the course as there is the risk reward option to always temp a shot at the green. |

Cheers Hodgie, it was meant as a compliment. Infact its an excellent hole. Just very difficult and frustrating at times! Some people are very touchy on here at times arent they. |

| John, Hodgie, maybe the defence mechanism just kicked in as the hole in question has come in for particular comments nearly every time that it is mentioned. Normally negative! Yes the hole is hard no one can say it is not, and yes it is one of the better ones on either course but there have been several suggestions from fill the pond in to have a big bank at the back to enable higher handicappers to hit the club of their choice onto the green for a chance of a par/ birdie. You probably touched a raw nerve. In my humble opinion I think it should be left well alone along with several other holes that get the same negative comments fill ponds in here move that tee box there they have heard them all I'm sure. Graham and his lads should be proud of the way the course stands up to all standards of golfer it is not easy full stop from scratch golfers upto and including the highest handicapper and I am sure we would all prefer a challenge other wise whats the point It will not help the fact that the course is dry we desperately needed the rain to soften it up but we would then all be whinging that it was no fun playing in the rain!! No win situation. I am sure admin will take your comments constructivly. But that is the point of this forum to bring questions like this to the attention of the people in charge, comments that would normally be kept between friends on the course. |

at the end of the day john that green is simply huge,
it must measure 20yards by 40yards,
i dont see it as being that hard of a shot,
just dont see what all the fuss is about |

As a high handicapper I love this hole, and as long as my tee shot is ok, will go for the green every time in two. worst that can happen is I end up in water and take a drop and pitch on in 4 and should still get either a 5 or 6 which is net birdie or par for a 24 handicapper like myself. however the real fun is if it does come off and I get on the green in 2 I should be looking at a net eagle. Fantastic hole, which can really get those stableford point up.
